Undergraduate Research Opportunities
There are undergraduate research opportunities EVERYWHERE on campus. You can find employment in one of the many research labs on campus; you can apply for internships both on and off campus, during the regular school year or over the summer; you can conduct undergraduate research while being mentored by a professor; and you can volunteer. Sometimes volunteering can be the best way to get your foot in the door. Just be TENACIOUS.
- The Office of Undergraduate Research is a great place to start. They have searchable databases, so it’s a one stop shop. But some of the best opportunities may not be widely advertised, so you’ll have to be tenacious and find them.
- The Marine Sciences Research Opportunities
- The Department of Biology has a host of Research, Volunteer, and Internship Opportunities
- The Department of Chemistry has almost 100 Undergraduate positions in various labs. Getting a position in one of these labs will involve contacting the Faculty member in charge of the lab to see about research positions. For instance, Professor Wightman’s Group is currently accepting applications for undergraduates looking to gain lab experience.
- The Eshelman School of Pharmacy as a number labs (some with undergraduate opportunities). Take note that a number of professors have labs that aren’t advertised and/or don’t have a public website, such as Prof Singleton‘s The Singleton Lab, so don’t just skim the surfaces when looking for opportunities.
- SURE-REU: Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program in Molecular Biosciences
- The Department of Computer Science support internships with local industries as well as a handful of departmental internships.
- The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (UNC-NCSU) has a number of labs that support undergraduate research
- The Department of Exercise and Sports Science have a number labs
- The Department of Geological Sciences also supports undergraduate research, directed studies, and lab positions
- The Department of Psychology also has undergraduate research opportunities
- The Department of Physics and Astronomy has several undergraduate opportunities as well as some amusing (if unhelpful) dead-end links on their website.
- The Department of Mathematics refers students to the OUR research database listed above, but it also has some interesting study abroad programs
